What Makes a Password Strong

Share Article

Length: Longer is better. Aim for at least 12 characters, but 16 or more is even safer.

Mix It Up: Use a mix of

  • Uppercase letters (A, B, C…)
  • Lowercase letters (a, b, c…)
  • Numbers (1, 2, 3…)
  • Special characters (!, @, #…)
  • Avoid the Obvious: Don’t use:
  • Your name, birthday, pet’s name, etc.
  • Common words or phrases (password123)
  • Keyboard patterns (qwerty)

How to Create Strong Passwords

  • Random is Best: Password generators (most password managers have these) can create truly random passwords that are very hard to crack.
  • Passphrases: Instead of a random word, try stringing together several unrelated words into a phrase. (Example: CorrectHorseBatteryStaple)

Additional Tips

  • Unique Passwords: Never use the same password for more than one important account (like your bank or your crypto exchange).
  • Password Manager: Password managers can generate strong passwords and remember them for you, so you only need to memorize one master password.
