Public Keys vs. Private Keys

Share Article

Think of cryptocurrency like having an email account

  • Public Key: This is your email address. If someone wants to send you crypto, they need your public key.
  • Private Key: This is like your email password. You use the private key to sign into your wallet and send crypto to others.

Important:

  • You can tell anyone your public key. It’s how they send you money.
  • NEVER tell anyone your private key! If someone knows it, they can take all your crypto!

How It Works?
Your wallet uses your private key to create your public key. But no one can figure out your private key just by knowing your public key.

The Big Idea: Understanding public and private keys is the first step to keeping your crypto safe. Think of them like the combination to a safe – your public key is the safe itself, and your private key is the combination needed to open it.
